I think that this quote by Simon J Charlesworth explains the behaviour of the kids in the class.

She was a trouble maker but I think it was because she knew the teacher looked down upon them and always presumed they didn't know much.
She revealed at the end that she knew about a philosopher and the teacher was shocked that she would know or be interested in something like that. She was right to be angry about what the teacher said about Soleyman but she was really cruel to tell him.

Whatever the kids said the teacher always seemed to be putting them down. An example is when the kid gets up who dresses like a goth says he likes dressing differently than the rest of the class but then the teacher undermines him by saying that lots of people dress like that. When you are a teenager dressing differently from others in your class, it is a big deal and a way of trying to find your identity so adults shouldn't sneer at it.

I did teacher training in an inner city school in Liverpool and it is exactly like this.
Teachers aren't allowed to be honest and say they are having a tough time for fear of appearing incompetent or weak so quite often suffer in silence.
Felt so sorry for Soleyman, he was the true victim in all this as the teacher wanted to save his own neck rather than defend him.
It seemed ridiculous why they would discuss pupils infront of other pupils - no wonder they kicked off.

by far the best inner-city school flick i have ever seen. the scenes shot in class room felt so real i sometimes thought i was watching a documentary instead of a scripted fictional film. ending the film on a long hand-held shot of empty class room was also a great idea from the director -- a picture is worth a thousand words.
